A timing screen is most useful when it supports what you are watching, rather than replacing it. A changing gap can prompt a good question, but rarely supplies the whole answer.

Follow a short sequence Instead of reacting to one lap, compare several. Note whether the gap is consistently moving in one direction or fluctuating. Then look for context in the broadcast, such as traffic or a recent stop.

Compare the situation too Cars shown next to each other in the running order may be at different points in their strategy. Before treating a gap as a direct measure of pace, check the recent history of both drivers.

Keep your notes simple Track two drivers, their gap and when each stops. Too many numbers can make the sporting story harder to follow. A small record, paired with what you can actually see, is often more useful than an elaborate prediction.
